6 Things To Do This Month: January 2020

Happy New Year! It’s the start of another decade, and what better way to ring it in than by trying out a bunch of new activities? From art festivals to pancake nights and parades, January has a lot lined up for the new you.

1) Singapore Art Week

Singapore Art Week, an annual celebration of visual arts, returns this January for its eighth edition. This year’s theme ‘Art Takes Over’ sees more than 100 art events taking place across Singapore. The nine-day celebration boasts myriad projects, exhibitions, and discussions. Some notable events under the Art Week celebrations include the Light to Night Festival, Prologue at The Arts House, S.E.A Focus, the AR.T Trail, and the Aliwal Urban Art Festival.

This year’s Art Week will feature a number of exhibitions, workshops, tours, talks, film screenings and music performances, in order to explore everything from traditional practices to visual arts. There will also be public art installations and lifestyle events suitable for everyone.

2) Light to Night Festival 2020: Invisible Cities

For two weeks, five of the Civic District’s public spaces – the National Gallery Singapore, Asian Civilisations Museum, The Arts House, Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall and Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay will be decorated with light, sound and movement to celebrate innovation and inspiration. This festival, under Singapore Art week, returns for its fourth edition this January.

The theme for this year is ‘Invisible Cities’ and the festival will feature an array of programmes featuring musicians, filmmakers and designers on a daily basis.

3) Singapore Dutch Pancake Night

After Tokyo, Rome, Paris, and Hong Kong, the Dutch Pancake Night is finally visiting Singapore. Organised by Robin Vogelaar, the founder of this worldwide event, the night is all about bonding, and of course, eating Dutch pancakes.

As an exchange student in Hong Kong and Boston, founder Vogelaar would make Dutch pancakes for some of his classmates. After returning to Amsterdam, Vogelaar kept this tradition alive by hosting pancake parties for bigger groups of people.

Free pancakes are provided, but do bring along your favourite toppings!

4) Lewis Capaldi: Live in Singapore 2020

Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi is coming to Singapore for the first time this January. Best known for 2019 pop ballad ‘Someone You Loved’, Capaldi was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Award at the 2019 Brit Awards.

5) Bon Iver Live in Singapore

American indie folk band Bon Iver will be back in Singapore in 2020, four years since their last sold-out show in 2016. The show is part of the band’s global tour, covering cities such as Bangkok and Jakarta. Fronted by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon, the band recently released their fourth album I, I, a critically acclaimed work.

6) Chingay 2020

The Chingay Parade is a vibrant testament to Singapore’s multicultural heritage. The festival, with its dazzling floats and street performances, is a part of the Chinese New Year festivities. 2020’s celebration will focus on the theme ‘Colours in Harmony’. The event will see stunning displays of fireworks, laser lights and pyrotechnics.
